Graze, Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel

One of the best value hotel restaurants in the city, Graze has proven a roaring success since its opening a few months back. Serving quality modern European cuisine, in a bistro style environment, with panoramic city and park views, it makes an effortless choice for lunch or dinner.

We’d previously been wowed by a lunchtime visit and this dinner date was no different. Thoughtful consideration of detail continued to be evident and, efficient and friendly service was consistent with our prior experience.

The small things add up to the overall impression and it’s these trivialities that Graze seems to take pride in. Potted herbs on the tables and, a splendid warm anchovy dip for freshly baked ciabatta bread and crisp crudités, demonstrate some of the thought gone into making a great start.

Ciabatta, Crudites and Warm Anchovy DipA bit of bubbly, Moet Chandon Brut Imperial Epernay (RM355 bottle, RM69 glass), further boosted our beginning and set the meal off with smiles and joviality.

The menu is short but we love that about a restaurant. A pet peeve for both hubby and I is when places try to do too much! We’d much prefer a smaller number of items with a guarantee that everything is done very well. We’re all over quality rather than quantity.

Hubby went with a classic Graze Caesar Salad (RM28). Deep fried anchovies (not the overly salty kind but the tamer smoother variety) and beef bacon added another layer of crispiness to the crunchy lettuce leaves. Grated Parmesan was not essential but the extra shavings mixed well with the creamy dressing.

The petite bird was so soft and toothsome that I had to force hubby’s hand to put the second leg back on my plate after he’d quickly pulled the first one through his teeth. The luscious stone fruit and oil from the poultry made a rich dressing, which would have caused any non-vegetarian to chow down all of their greens.

Minestrone Soup (RM18) – wholesome, full of finely chopped vegetables, rich tomato flavour, comfort food at its best – but… you’ll have to take hubby’s word for that. His broth cooled a little faster than mine and he had lapped up every last drop before my spoon even started to ascend across the table.

The onion was caramelized lusciously, leaving a sweetness in the mouth that kept taste buds salivating for the next spoonful. The concave sides of the serving bowl trapped in the heat causing the cheese to melt, infusing stringy strands in the broth and adding another layer of texture. I might dare to concur with hubby that this is the best onion soup we’ve had in KL.

Benefiting from the chef’s morning market acquisitions, we ordered the special of the day, fish (between RM168 – RM188 depending on size) roasted with a little salt and vegetables.

The butter and lemon balanced each other out with the thin oily coating in the mouth lifted by the tangy citrus. This gentle seesaw of flavours played well with both fish. The Plaice flesh proved soft and fine, and the Sea Bream was a touch flakier and saltier. We liked both, but the more robust texture of the sea bream was more suited to our personal fancy. Tuscany tomatoes, roasted potatoes and baked fennel made delicious sides.

House-made Vanilla Gelato was the simple creamy ending hubby desired, and my Peach Parfait with Fresh Peaches (RM18) was just as simple and satisfying.

Be forewarned however that Italian Moka coffee is worth saving a pocket of tummy space for (we remembered our lunch experience a little too late). Partnered with Sicilian Cannoli, it makes a special ending.
