Having stayed in SS3 for a good period of time, I am glad that this quiet neighborhood finally has a proper service restaurant. Eighty9 Restaurant and Bar is opened by three friends who share a common passion in food and travel.
Here, you will find fusion dishes that combine varieties of ingredients from different cuisines and regions – all conceived based on their personal travelling experiences.
Pork plays a big part in the menu and ‘siu yuk’ (roast pork) appears predominantly throughout it. Great on its own, even better when dipped in mustard sauce.
The Grilled Pork & Herb Medallions @ RM13 was delicious: ridiculously succulent and bursting with juices. It would be a real winner if they used the same recipe to make a burger patty, we can’t wait for that to happen.
If you are a ribs lover, Eighty9’s BBQ Ribs @ RM29 will certainly satisfy. Fork tender with a beautiful glaze, their homemade BBQ sauce was not too sweet and perfect for our liking.
But for those looking for something unique, try the Bak Kut Teh Infused Ribs @ RM29. We were glad that this almost-national dish was treated with respect, as they successfully captured the essence of the herbal broth. Definitely recommended.
The Sambal Saba Shrooms @ RM28 was another exceptional dish that we thoroughly enjoyed. Saba (mackerel) is usually grilled with salt or teriyaki in Japanese cuisine but it’s equally (or even more) delicious when paired with sambal – the combination simply works.
Dan Dan Noodles @ RM20 is one of the best seller here and it’s served with roast pork and coarsely chopped peanut bars. Personally, I like that it did not have any Szechuan peppercorns and the spiciness was derived from the shrimp chili instead. The noodle itself was great too, homemade with a texture similar to pan mee but springier.
Dessert-wise it’s hard to go wrong with the Salted Egg Molten Lava Cake @ RM17. All of us unanimously voted it as the best among the four we tried.
Coming a close second was the Deconstructed Lemon Meringue Pie @ RM17. Visually appealing and interactive too, as you will need to break the ‘egg’ to reveal the contents inside.
Other options include Death by Chocolate and Lemongrass Jelly with Mango Sherbet – both also RM17. While satisfying and generally faultless, they just did not have that ‘wow factor’ compared to the two shown earlier.
House specialty drinks are priced at a flat RM9 and I would recommend trying the Sawi Sour Plum. It’s prepared with premium Hong Kong ‘choy sum’ which gives the juice a delicate sweetness without any leafy taste you would have come to expect.
But if you are not feeling THAT green, the Lime Sour Plum 2.0 (second from left) is a modern take on the classic ‘kat zai suen mui’.
Overall, Eighty9 serves up wallet-friendly and interesting fusion dishes without going overboard with their combinations, and more importantly, not for the sake of novelty. I am looking at you nasi lemak cheesecake.
