The SS15 Square is a rather nostalgic place for me. Driving there that evening reminded me of my short stint of studying in Inti back during my younger years. A place that was once familiar but no longer anymore – the turnover of shops there are startling nowadays. I don’t frequent the area as often, though I really should. There’s so much new places to eat!
Let’s put it this way – for me, Rendezvous Corner is like a general store. The name itself is already a mouthful and so was its menu.
You’d get pages of conventional Western food here – chicken, lamb, beef, seafood, no pork; thrown in with a couple of Oriental dishes, a few pages dedicated to drinks and some to desserts, with a selection of 14 flavors of ice cream to boost.
There’s also ongoing beer promotions, from Rm38++ per bucket and 20 types of flavored shisha available after 10pm. I’m not sure if I’d miss anything else in between.
Now, you’d ask – having so much in one menu for a 3 month old restaurant, is that a good or a bad thing?
Rendezvous Corner Menu Here.
Starting my review with drinks.
Tropical Fruit Tea. Rm9.80.
Not your standard pot of tea but a tropical fruit punch that had dainty slices of fruit inside. I really liked the added touch of sliced fruits, but taste wise though, it came far sweeter than my usual liking.
The froth gave it away – the coffees here are machine made, hence the cheaper price tag. So, if you’re in it for the caffeine fix, by all means go ahead. But if you’re looking for some good quality blends – you won’t get that here. The cappuccino tasted decent nonetheless. All coffee orders come with two homemade cookies.
Sitting on a pool of melted cheese, we sucked on escargots to jump start our taste buds.
Potato Skin. Rm7.80.
The chicken bits, ham and cheese were harmonious condiments, but sadly, the potato skin was a letdown. It was mushy and didn’t have that chewiness and crispness that I was hoping for. A little longer in the oven perhaps?
Cheese Fondue Chicken. Rm16.80.
The fried chicken chunks were crusty, salty, succulent and smothered with a dripping mix of marmalade sauce and cheese. Now – this is what I call a sinful-on-every-mouthful experience. The combination was delicious.
Chicken Satay Burger. Rm13.80.
The satay burger was a great idea – minced chicken patty with peanut sauce layered between ketupat rice. The satay sauce itself was sweet and really good, but I’m not a fan of the patty.
Fried Cheesy Chicken. Rm15.80.
Wrapped in a deliciously crisp crust; Packed and rolled with generous layers of ham and chicken meat; Filled with melted cheese in between. This was really good – if there’s one dish I would come back for – its definitely this.
Red Velvet Cupcake. Rm4.80.
The cupcakes may need some major tweaking.
Chocolate Lava Cake. Rm6.80.
Huge fan of the coconut ice cream served at the side but not so much of the chocolate lava cake. I felt that there were grainy clumps in the middle. My friend really liked it however, personal preference nonetheless.
Chocolate Fondue. Rm12.80.
The chocolate fondue was smooth – no clumping this time – with dainty presentation of fruits and tidbits that was gleefully refreshing after a happy meal.
Overall Rating: 6/10. If you are looking for cheap and decent Western food in the SS15 and Subang Jaya area, Rendezvous Corner would serve the purpose. Dishes here averaged at about Rm15 per serving. I would recommend the Escargots, Cheese fondue chicken, Fried Cheesy Chicken and to some extend – the chocolate lava cake – hoping that mine was just an unlucky one. However, I thought its menu needed a little more focus. Its great to have an abundance of choices but another when I simply do not know what the signature dishes are. Thus, adding on a signature dishes page or having a cupcake or ice cream of the day promotion would greatly help. So,
To note, there’s two other branches under the Rendezvous chain of restaurant, one in Kg Pandan and the other in Cheras. Both are steakhouses and have similar menus.
