A reader recently urged me to give Hacha Mecha a visit, saying that it was one of her favorite Japanese restaurant in town. I beg to differ.
We ordered 3 types of charcoal grilled kushiyaki to share. Shiitake Mushrooms (Rm8/skewer) with bonito flakes, Ox Tongue (Rm16) sprinkled with seasalt and black pepper, and Chicken Tsukune (Rm13), which I was not a fan of however – too mushed-up for my liking. Dip it in yakitori tare and egg yolk for enhanced flavors.I should’ve put a halt to ordering the Lobster Popcorn (Rm55). For me, overdone lobster meat would eventually taste quite like crabmeat. Nevertheless, the crisp popcorn batter was light and fluffy, alongside chewy lobster fillings. At the side, wasabi cocktail sauce.I wasn’t huge on the Chicken Roulade (Rm45) either. Tender chicken meat tucked with tomato coulis and chicken floss slaw, wrapped in chicken skin, and topped with sweet potato chips. There’s just something about the flavors that didn’t quite do it for me.Two luscious ingredients in one bowl! The Bara Wagyu Foie Gras Donburi (Rm95) was teriffic. The blackmores wagyu was sweet and buttery, the foie gras was rich and silky, and the shiitake mushrooms and wagyu infused tare glaze added textures and flavors to the overall dish. The choice of rice may need to be enhanced however. The Strawberry And Miso Chocolate Sins (Rm28) was one peculiar-looking dessert. By the time this was placed on our table, the white chocolate miso ice cream beneath have drastically melted down – or was it meant to be? The maggie-liked strands were chocolate coral, which tasted too glossy and crunchy for my liking.
Overall Rating: 7/10. It’s obvious that there were more misses than hits for my meal that evening. Perhaps I ordered the wrong dishes and should probably give the restaurant another go. Nevertheless, I would still recommend the charcoal grilled skewers and also the Baru Wagyu Foie Gras Donburi.
