As a major residential area for students, Setapak is never short on affordable places to eat. Dozens of them can be found in the Danau Kota area you can enjoy your meal in an air-conditioned and Wi-Fi enabled environment.
When it comes to food variety, Blue Ribbon is ahead of the rest. The menu offers a great mix of local, Western and Asian dishes, so there is bound to be something for everyone. Even bak kut teh is available here!
The Spaghetti aglio e olio @ RM5.50 is probably one of the best deals you can get in KL now. The portion is as large as the other regular pastas, but more importantly, it’s actually tasty with a zesty garlic aroma. Do note that this promo item is available on Tuesdays only.
For a good bang for your buck, the Chicken Chop with Fried Spaghetti @ RM15.90 is recommended and guaranteed to fill you up. It features a whole de-boned and meaty chicken chop grilled to a succulent and a regular portion of spicy fried spaghetti. A couple of sauces are available but we liked their homemade black pepper sauce the most.
If you love a good and honest chicken burger you won’t go wrong with the Kahuna Burger with fries @ RM8.50. Neatly assembled, the burger comes with a homemade patty so it’s fresh and tender.
Then, there’s also grilled pineapple for extra juiciness and a tropical flair. I may be wrong but I think this burger was inspired by the Big Kahuna Burger which appears in Quentin Tarantino’s movies.
Another dish we liked was the Penne Arrabbiata @ RM8.90, a somewhat rare pasta that’s not offered by most cafes in town. The tomato based sauce had a rich consitency and a balance sweet and spicy flavor, making it an appetizing appeal.
Understandbly, the younger crowd would pick the usual carbonara over this, but I am sure adults (like us) will be more appreciative of the rustic flavor.
Blue Ribbon is also popular for their spicy dishes such as Spicy Shabu-Shabu and Spicy Hell Ramen. We were told those were really spicy, so we opted for something that’s spicy but not punishingly hot – Green Chicken Curry Spaghetti @ RM10.90 that also includes a complimentary glass of iced tea. The green curry tasted authentic so we wished there was more of it.
You can probably tell from the food that Blue Ribbon’s menu is geared towards students so the dishes are simple, big in flavor and affordably priced.
So if you happen to be in the area looking for a nice and relaxing place to have a meal, this place should certainly be on your list.
