The Spa, The Surin, Phuket
Words by Kirsten DurwardPictures by The Yum List (Monica Tindall)
Subtly integrated into the natural environment between wind sculpted boulders and verdant rain forest sits the tranquil haven of the Surin Spa. Rustic elegance seems like an oxymoron but both of these words spring to mind when musing on this experience. In keeping with the gentle indoor-outdoor thoughtful design that pervades the whole property, soft tones of fawns and grey abound as we relax with the whisper of the wind on our skin. I feel imbued with a sense of space and wellbeing.
Pathway Leading up to The SpaWe refresh ourselves with a beautifully scented, perfectly cold towel and a sip of the Surin’s signature rosella juice while selecting our oils from a delightful collection of miniature midnight blue round bellied pots. After sniffing and scenting, Monica plumps for the Surin Blend, while I decide to start my afternoon’s relaxation with Balancing Oil.
Spa ReceptionWe are gently escorted to our individual chalet style treatment rooms. Spacious and light with en-suite shower and changing area, you cannot help but feel a sense of peace and calm in this low key environment. A generous ceramic foot bath awaits, brimming with milk infused warm water enhanced by floating roses and lime slices. Beautiful. A salt sea scrub while the charming therapist Pui, compliments my choice of nail colour, before disrobing and heading to the table for a Surin Wave massage, that promises to integrate the stretching and acupressure of Thai massage with classic oil massage.
Natural ProductsAs I lie face down, she lightly covers my head lightly wrapping my hair in a soft towel. A nice touch that I have not experienced before, which adds to the sense of being safely cocooned and (let’s be honest here) totally pampered. Light pressure to the mid of my back, and soft strokes radiate up towards the shoulders. Aaah, now this is the way to start a holiday for sure. Rhythmic pressure blends into the background music as everything begins to dissolve and fade into the background. Movement up and down as she finds spots of tension and whittles them away.
Treatment RoomA relaxing head massage ends the treatment. Not good for the vanity as I always look like a maned lion after that experience. But wonderful to soothe the soul and bring a sense of harmony and balance to the body. There is a reason why Thailand is renowned for massage though, and it’s not just the techniques, but the beautiful spirits and gentle energy of the people who surround and care for you.
